About this site, and how it makes money
Scope & Bill is owner-operated and independent. It is written by someone who has run a services business for fifteen years. Some links on the site pay a commission. The templates are the author's own working documents. All of that is spelled out below.
What this is
A site about the commercial side of businesses that sell work by the project or the retainer: software agencies, consultancies, studios and dev shops. It covers scoping, contracts, pricing, billing, clients, team, and what AI is doing to all of it.
Most of what ranks for these subjects is published by a company selling a template library, a legal form, or project management software. This site is written from the other chair, by someone who has sent the statement of work, run the project, and chased the invoice.
How the site makes money
Plainly:
- Some links pay a commission. When an article recommends a kind of product or service and links to one, that link may pay the site if you sign up or buy. Those links open in a new tab and are marked as sponsored in the page code.
- Some links are referrals to services. These include a code licensing program, a delivery partner, an advisory engagement and an agency directory. The site may be paid when a referral turns into business.
No one pays to be written about, and no vendor sees an article before it is published. A recommendation appears where the argument of the page leads to it. If a link pays and a better option does not, the better option still gets named as a category so you can find it yourself.
The templates
The contracts, forms and checklists on the templates page are the author’s own working documents, written and revised over years of client work. They are original to this site and are not licensed from a third party. You may use and adapt them for your own business.
They are not legal advice. They default to US law. Have a lawyer in your jurisdiction review any contract before you sign it.
The numbers
Figures in articles are worked examples with the arithmetic shown, so you can replace the inputs with your own. The calculators run in your browser and send nothing anywhere. Pages about pricing, hiring and AI show the date they were last checked, because those are the pages that go stale.
Corrections
If something here is wrong, say so. Corrections are made on the page and the updated date changes.
